2019 Edition

In 2019 I am racing as NZL1, because there is another kiwi! I am joined by the women’s NZ distance record holder Kinga. See our pages here:

TEAM NEW ZEALAND WEBPAGE (and facebook/nzxalps)

I leave for Europe on 9 June 2019, arriving at the latest possible time for meetings, medicals and media. Like last time, my brother Ben and Mum (Karen) will be supporting me for the race. It will be my third Red Bull X-Alps.

Athletes and supporters pay their own way to the race, with the Red Bull organisation responsible for event organisation and bringing it to the masses. In contrast to traditional paragliding competitions, this event is by invitation and there is a focus on character development as the drama unfolds on this adventure.

Previous races

Nick represented New Zealand in the 2015 edition, with a dramatic come back story heavily featured by the event media that also earned him the Best Sportsman Award.

In 2017 Nick covered over 1000km of the course and again made the top 10, with his brother Ben and mother Karen winning the Best Supporters award, validating the minimalist approach.

We thank our major sponsors:

The New Zealand Hang gliding and Paragliding Association (NZHGPA) is supporting NZL1 and NZL2 with $2000 each. Thank you! Please remember to register if you are a visiting pilot – they’re a friendly bunch of people doing great work for us so we can have fun.

Minor / gear sponsors:

A tiny self contained GPS logger with FLARM from XCTracer, as my skydrop readout isn’t required alongside the xalps instrument, flyskin clothing, gloves from fly2base, a Supair helmet from my instructor at Paragliding Queensland, delicious one square meal muesli bars from OSM, thank you all! Thanks also to www.nelsontravelbroker.co.nz and Paraventures for helping us arrange travel insurance.
